Jena Tec Launches Precision Rotary Tables

Jena Tec announces two further models to its linear and rotary motion ranges in the field of precision rotary tables. The first model, the MRT230 is a lightweight ring grinding unit driven by a pancake segmented motor via a gearbox and toothed belt. The cast alloy base plate allows bolting directly to a grinding machine table.

Mounted on the rotary axes employing ABEC 7 angular contact bearings is a magnetic chuck, 230mm diameter providing load capability of up to 30kg. The central 40mm location spigot allows location of fixturing and the unit can be supplied with a variety of 3 jaw chucks and t-slotted face plates on request. The unit is supplied complete with an electrical control box providing infinitely variable speed control up to 120RPM. The MRT230 is an ideal solution for rotary grinding of bearing spacers and other applications where constant surface finish is important combined with accurate parallelism.

The second series is the ABRT Series Air Bearing Rotary Table. This expansive range provides a highly accurate rotational motion in either manual or CNC mode with minimal effort through the provision of an air bearing cushion. The unique hydraulic clamping mechanism allows rigid clamping for heavy duty machining. With table diameters from 500mm to 2000mm and table loading up to 10,000kg with repeatability of +/-0.2 arcsecs, the range is an exceptional high quality attachment suitable for a variety of applications in boring, milling, grinding and inspection.

The ABRT series can be provided with a torque motor option, encoder feedback and digital readout and can be fully integrated within a CNC control. Jena also offer an industrialised PC based CNC control allowing retrofitting to existing manual machine tools. Customised designs of ABRT rotary axes can be provided on request relating to higher loading, diameter, acceleration and tolerances.

Jena Tec secures long term contract in China

Jena Tec, a UK based designer and manufacturer of precision machine tool ballscrews, linear motion and spindles with facilities in England, USA and Germany, has secured a long term contract with a customer in China for the supply of a high precision spindle used in an accurate CNC turning machine. The Asian customer will be producing highly accurate machine tools principally for export to Europe and North America and will utilise Jena Tec’s high performance spindle to satisfy the demanding requirements of small precision turned components.
Manufactured using carefully selected materials including nitride hardened rotating parts and precision grade rolling element bearings, the spindle is guaranteed to provide a concentric run out within 0,001mm (1 micron) with excellent thermal stability and low noise running at up to 6,000RPM. The spindle product is accurately ground using the latest precision equipment and assembled by hand by skilled machine tool personnel to attain the highest levels of accuracy. Each spindle is closely inspected and certificated as meeting the required standard which is documented to the customer.

Jena Tec, part of the Avingtrans plc Engineering Technology Group, was selected on the basis that it could design and manufacture a high precision product rapidly for prototype testing followed by volume production ensuring the customers’ product development programme was supported adequately.
The contract in total represents £1.8m for Jena Tec and was won against strong competition from Japan and Korea and further supports Jena Tec’s continued success in the niche sector of high precision linear and rotary motion components.
The name of Jena Tec is closely linked to the town of Jena in Germany where it has maintained one of its manufacturing facilities for over 30 years. The name of Jena is closely associated with Carl Zeiss and high precision scientific, medical and engineering industries with companies such as Carl Zeiss Jena, Jenoptik and Schott Jenaer resident in this famous University town.
Jena Tec is justifiably proud of its heritage and ability to adapt to the changing global economy by continuing to design and develop high precision products.

Jena Tec extends UK, EU and USA stocking policy for precision ballscrews

Jena Tec, part of the Avingtrans plc Engineering Technology Group, has substantially increased its finished and part finished ballscrew stocking to allow more effective servicing of its respective markets.

Following substantial capital investment in the latest thread whirling, grinding and process machinery, Jena Tec is able to provide ex-stock availability of precision rolled, ground and hard whirled ballscrew assemblies from grades IT1 to IT10. Special sizes and make to print services are also available.

The increased size ranges include from diameter 16mm through to 80mm in stock in a variety of precision grades and up to 6m in length.

Ballnuts are able to be offered to DIN standards as insert design or through the nut transfer but also due to the Jena Tec unique ballnut design are able to be offered made to sample or drawing through Jena Tec rapid manufacturing service, whereby ballscrew shafts will be cut to length, turned, ground, machined and assembled.

The improved stocking policy makes Jena Tec a leading manufacturer and distributor of ballscrews able to offer short delivery times to a high standard satisfying both the demanding aftermarket and also the requirements of the OEM.

As part of its enhanced service, Jena Tec can provide call off agreements, scheduled deliveries and customisation to suit the OEM’s actual machine build. The ballscrew range is complimentary to the complete linear motion and rotary motion product range provided by Jena Tec including linear rail, end supports, linear guides, machine tool spindles and linear actuators.

Jena Tec SBC C Type Linear Guide Improved Rolling Performance

Jena Tec is pleased to introduce the new SBG(S) - C type linear guides adopt existing 4 row circular arc internal geometry and can therefore interchange with any carriage now operating on SBC standard rail profile. The C type design incorporates ball return tubes and reversing end plates now moulded together as a single component . This offers smoother operation than all previous internal designs for linear bearing motion in any plane whether vertical or horizontal. The C type single component mould achieves great reduction in ball direction reversing and “no-load return tube” noise, allowing better lubricant flow . Lubrication is simpler, as the grease nipple can be inserted in multiple orientations ( Front, Left and Right ).

XLF Ballscrews Extend Machine Tool Life

Ball Screws are mechanical devices for converting rotary motion into linear motion and vice versa. Ball Screws have become an integral part in modern machine tools due to their positional accuracy, load bearing characteristics and low friction when compared with lead screws, however little has changed in design since the first use of the ball screw in machine tools some decades ago. A common misconception is that to improve a ball screw all that is necessary is to improve lead accuracy, whilst improvement in lead accuracy is important, there are many areas in which design improvements can have significant impact on overall machine performance.

Therefore, the ball screw cannot be considered in isolation but as one element influencing servo loop performance. In developing their new XLF™range ball screws, Jena Rotary Technology Ltd have recognised the importance of the ball screw in servo loop performance, and designed a ball screw to meet the demands of modern machine tool controls. One important factor to consider is reversal error, (reversal error occurs when lost motion is apparent during change of rotational direction in the ball screw) which can affect positioning and surface finish in the work piece. The reaction of the mechanical elements in a system can have a significant effect on reversal error.
The unique design of the XLF™ has produced a ball screw with extremely low coefficient of friction whilst retaining high system rigidity and eliminating reversal error. Due to the design and materials used, it has also been possible to reduce the preload in the ball nut whilst retaining rigidity. Ball Screw life, and wear accuracy have also been significantly improved, the ball screw is also extremely quiet compared with traditional designs. Another benefit is thermal stability of the assembly due to the reduced preload, improved rigidity and low coefficient of friction, producing a ball screw with extraordinarily low levels of heat generation.
These improvements have been achieved using hybrid materials and changes in the design of the raceway profile in the ball screw and the ball nut, the changes are not noticeable to the eye with the exception of the blue/grey appearance of the ball screw, and the reduced preload and super smooth run can be felt when the ball nut is turned by hand.
Clearly these benefits are not restricted to the machine tool industry; any applications where high accuracy, extended life and low levels of noise are required would benefit from the advantages the XLF™ range ball screws offer.
